The name "Ruconu" holds significant meaning for our family, derived from the fusion of our three beloved sons' names - Ruan, Marco, and Keanu. It serves as a powerful representation of their unbreakable bond and forms the heart of our brand, symbolizing unity and strength within the Du Plessis family. In difficult times our shared deep affection for animals bonded us as a family, strengthening our connections and fostering a shared passion for our equine companions.

My equestrian journey began in early childhood on our farm in Hoedspruit. I cherished the moments spent on horseback, trailing alongside my dad, Jan Cronjé, as we explored the bush and fields while he attended to his daily farming duties. My father's deep understanding of animal behaviour as a true horseman and stockman, along with his passion for horse breeding, sparked my fascination with horses from a young age. Engaging in conversations about conformation, breeding objectives, and the intricacies of human-horse relationships unknowingly honed my skills in assessing horses' physical attributes and fueled my dreams of a future in breeding.

Despite my passion for horses and the outdoors, life took a different course after I finished school, steering me towards studies and a short career in spa therapy. It was during this time that I met my soulmate Eduard du Plessis, a man who captured my heart with his wonderful kindness, integrity and courage. Eduard and his three young sons, quickly became a big part of my life, bonding over our mutual love for animals and the outdoors.

A few years later our journey led us to acquire a lifestyle farm in Clarens, Eastern Free State, providing ample space for horses. Our love for horses blossomed into a cherished family pastime, I knew our farm was destined to be a haven for us and these majestic creatures.

One unforgettable day in 2007, my father ventured to an appaloosa stud farm in the Amajuba Mountains, drawn by an ad in the Farmer’s Weekly of registered stud horses for sale. During his visit a captivating scene unfolded, a cattle herder rode toward him astride a beautiful black spotted blanket Appaloosa stallion. Enthralled by the stallion's grace, athleticism, and undeniable quality, my father instantly fell in love with the horse. Without hesitation, he bought the stallion and brought him home. We named him Zulu in honour of his wonderful and proud rider.

The arrival of the Appaloosa stallion marked a turning point in our horsey pursuits. Enthralled by this wonderful horse, we later expanded our herd by welcoming two of his sisters into our fold. As we spent more time with these remarkable horses, our admiration for the Appaloosa breed deepened. My husband's riding skills flourished riding the considerate stallion, further proving his versatility and gentle nature, even with beginners and children. Among my nieces first words spoken was the name Zulu. Countless memorable times and rides were shared with Zulu, solidifying his place as a cherished member of our equine family.

Delving into Zulu's lineage unveiled a remarkable heritage tracing back to the esteemed Appaloosa stallion, Toby 1 and Old Blue, recognized for their exceptional abilities and fantastic temperaments. The lineage of these Appaloosas inspired us to breed a handful of mares to Zulu with resounding success.

We knew that breeding quality horses, depended on finding quality mares. It took us five years to find mares that would support our ultimate breeding objectives. We initially selected top mares by Luke's Like A Million and Peru's Scen Tao and later daughters of Wap’s Spot 2, Kondos Ahelias and Alpha Toby’s Moonshine. This marked the formalization of Ruconu Appaloosa Stud in 2017 and cementing our commitment to preserving and promoting the Appaloosa breed.

When asked why breeding Appaloosas held a special place in our hearts, the answer was simple – because of Zulu, the stallion that captured our hearts like no other horse has ever done before, his character and excellence illuminated the path we were destined to follow, fostering a deep-rooted passion for the Appaloosa breed.

We remain committed to balancing the unique qualities of the Appaloosa breed with the modern sport horse type, which is essential for preserving their rich heritage while promoting the breed.

We invite you to visit us at Ruconu Appaloosa Stud where you can explore these horses to your heart’s content.
